PROJECT DETAILS
What is something you wish you knew before you started trading Forex?
This will surprise most traders who are reading this but this one thing is so crucial and this is not known by 99% of forex traders out there and for me it took years for me to finally have this epiphany, this one thing is the difference between a winning and losing trader. The actual concept of trading!Every trader that starts out trading FX or any asset has the same mindset. Look at charts, draw some lines ( call it technical analysis ), throw some indicators on, scroll back the chart and look at all the times on the chart where trades could be taken, count the win rate ( which seems ridiculously high ) and have false hopes and expectations to start making money. Check the calendar on FXstreet or ForexFactory and get an idea of news coming out and take trades based on that. Go big or go home. Size up, with the expectation of more wins than losses ( 90% win rate ) etc and go YOLO by buying way higher lots. All beginners gamble, every beginner gambles. When you hear the term “gamble”, you think it is not you but it is the rest of traders, it can’t be you. You are trading, you have taken the trade based on a system of technical and fundamental parameters and you’re bound to be profitable. Many beginners fail to realise the gravity of “gambling”. The distinction between gambling and trading.I wish I knew the gravity of gambling, Having the wrong mindset and approach and working in the wrong direction will mentally frustrate you to no end, increase your stress 10 fold and make you lose money that you could’ve otherwise compounded. You don’t realise this until very later on. When you do realise, you realise that all that money and time that was gambled away could be making you some income every month if you’d have wisened up sooner.Gambling essentially means that mathematically the odds of you making money are 0. ZERO. Do not falsely assume that what you’re doing is wrong, I did this, I did not look at that indicator properly, I was late to open or close the trade, my stop loss was too tight etc. There’s always going to be some mistake on your end that is going to make you think you did not perform your best. You keep switching approaches but keep doing the same thing over and over without realising. Millions of traders have access to the same tools as you so how is it that a combination of oscillator and EMA based system going to make you money? With gambling, the odds of you making money are ZERO. Why? That doesn’t make sense .. I have 30% chances of making money etc. False. All false. Because a gambler never quits. He doesn’t understand the concept of gambling. Even if you make 10,000$ on a trade, you’re bound to eventually lose it all! The more trades you make the lower are your chances of making money trading forex. You only need to lose once or twice to blow your account. Sizing lower would just not make enough money so gambling seems like a good option. It’s a gamble right, either you make money or you lose money, right? Psychologically, subconsciously you are primed to make money, hence you do the gamble. Do gamble trades less than 5 times, just 5 times and your odds of making money are already incredibly low. You are bound to lose money! What I wish I knew are the implications of gambling and distinction between gambling and actual trading. Looking at charts with naked eye to see when conditions met, money was made or not and immediately jumping in is a fools errand and you know how the old age adage goes, a fool and his money are soon parted. Trading is practice. Practice, Practice, Practice.Find a system. Open a demo. At the minimum , based on your system, take 30-50trades. I believe 30-50trades is the bare minimum for statistical significance. This is the practice of execution. Calculate your profit, maximum floating losses during the whole period ( The Peak ), Win Rate. These metrics will tell you your edge in trading. You can never know when a losing trade comes. You can never know when a streak of losses comes in a perfectly workable system with an edge. You have to take losses, every single trader on the planet has losing trades. This is the reason you don’t size higher on any one trade. Sizing high on any one trade just because you have confidence is exactly how traders lose money. Every trader has confidence in their trade, otherwise they wouldn’t take the trade to begin with. You are taking the trade with adequate size based on your account size based on the fact that you have confidence.Confidence has to come from a system and not an individual trade. Any one individual trade can fail, no matter how confident you are but it is difficult for a good system to fail over a large number of trades. You cannot become a multimillionaire by flipping 100$ or 1000$ accounts. You lose your 100$ or 1000$ to make the broker millions in revenue. To recap, if your capital is too low, just learn how to trade ( without gambling ) so when you do have good money to trade with, you have the right mindset, the right approach, the right process to make some consistent income from it. Remember, learning good habits is difficult but unlearning bad habits is infinitely more difficult.
